BAREED / THE ARCHIVE
A project by Hanoot NYC.
Bareed is an archive of postage stamps from the Middle East and North Africa. It brings these small, everyday objects into focus as works of art and traces of the region’s histories.
Through lettering, colour, portraits and symbols, stamps offer a glimpse into different eras: colonial rule, struggles for independence, and the making of modern nations. Their designs reveal how issuing authorities pictured these countries, what they chose to celebrate, and whose stories they left out.
The archive preserves original lettering, paper and postmarks. Dates, captions and issuing authorities follow available sources, placing each stamp within its historical context.
Each scan includes available information about its source and reuse rights. Where provenance is unknown, it is marked as such.
